We're building a new home for art, artists, and curious minds in York.

The Moxie Centre for Art

The Moxie is a not-for-profit arts centre taking shape at 37 Dalton Terrace, a ten-minute walk from the city walls. We're aiming to open in stages from late 2026 onwards.

Scroll down to see what we're working towards. Some elements may change as planning permission and other approvals come through.

The Artist Studios

Around 15 affordable studios across two shared rooms. They come in different sizes, from a desk to a 60 sq ft partitioned space. Studio artists can exhibit their work in an annual group show in the gallery, get discounts around the building, and work alongside peers who'll push their practice further.

Studios are let by the rolling month. There are no long lease commitments. You can stay for a season or for years.

The Photography Studio

A photography studio of around 1,000 sq ft, available to hire by the hour. It'll suit commercial photographers as much as ambitious amateurs, with professional equipment to rent.

The Darkroom

A fully equipped traditional black-and-white darkroom, hireable by the session. A short safety induction is all it takes to earn independent access. We'll also run darkroom workshops for beginners.

The Meeting Room

Home to The Moxie's programme: artist talks, hands-on workshops, taster sessions, and practical help with the business of being an artist. You'll also be able to hire it for your own workshops, photography club meetings, or community events.

The Cafe

A counter-service cafe at the heart of the building, serving coffee, tea, and snacks. A small shop alongside sells darkroom supplies, artist postcards, and prints.

This is for you, even if art isn't.
